The embroidery pattern “Kanatitsa” is one of the oldest and most recognizable symbols in Bulgarian folk needlework. It dates back to the time of the Thracians and has been preserved through the centuries as a sign of protection, harmony, and eternity.

“Kanatitsa” is a geometric motif composed of symmetrically arranged triangles or rhombuses, often resembling outspread wings—hence its name, derived from the word “kanat” (wing). Its symbolism is associated with the soul’s flight, the aspiration for freedom, and the balance between masculine and feminine energy.

This embroidery is a powerful apotropaic symbol—a protective sign embroidered on clothing and home textiles to ward off evil and attract positive energy.

The colors of Kanatitsa are typically bold and contrasting—red (for life and strength), black (for wisdom and protection), white (for purity), and sometimes elements in green or blue, symbolizing nature and spirituality.
